Meet Matthew: Backup Care Helped Him Keep His Job

Our team helped a family’s father keep his job. He was considering reducing his work hours prior to engaging with our care consultants who instead helped him find full-time, affordable childcare. Keep reading to learn more.

The Respite of Corporate Childcare Benefits

Matthew has been on a leave of absence from work due to complications associated with COVID-19. His family has one child—a four-year-old in daycare. Due to COVID-19, her daycare closed. She also lives with asthma, so at the recommendation of her doctors, she cannot return to daycare until COVID-19 infection rates are lower. To further complicate the situation, Matthew's partner is an ICU nurse who treats COVID-19 patients during every shift. Because of the child’s risk and the co-parent being a first responder to COVID-19, the co-parent moved out of the home to protect the family leaving Matthew alone to manage childcare.

  • Mom is an essential worker in the medical field who had to move out of the home.
  • Having asthma, the child is at a higher risk for COVID-19.
  • Matthew wasn’t able to juggle work and childcare.
  • The family lived apart for 6 months.

While Matthew was managing, he hadn’t been able to work and the situation wasn’t ideal. Their ultimate goal was to find a nanny to assist so that Matthew could get back to work and prepare the home for Mom’s return. The family has been apart since March. Helpr’s Core Care Concierge service first consulted with the family in July. We started with an introductory consultation to learn more about the family’s care needs. We also consulted on the specific intricacies that go along with bringing a nanny into the home, as the family has never had to utilize a nanny in the past. After consulting with the family and learning more about their specific needs, we drafted a job description and began sourcing candidates. We reviewed over 30 resumes for this family and narrowed it down to two nannies.

We ultimately decided on a candidate who is a former preschool teacher looking to continue childcare outside of a group setting. We finalized all the details with both the nanny and the family, including reference checks, a criminal background check, a social media screen, and a nanny contract. The nanny started with the family on August 31st; since then, Matthew has been able to return to work and prepare the household for Mom to move back into the family’s home.

  • Helpr started off the process with an introductory consultation to learn more.
  • Helpr was able to find the right candidate for the job, a former preschool teacher.
  • After the hiring process, the family was able to move back into the same household.
  • They now have a primary care nanny who has taken the burden off the parents’ shoulders.

At Helpr, our goal has always been to ensure the accessibility and affordability of care to all working families, no matter their circumstances. If you'd like to learn more about our backup care services and mission, feel free to set up a call:

In His Own Words

“Kassidy is working out very well so far and I am and I am now able to make more solid progress on getting the bedroom ready for my wife. My job has extended my leave for a few additional weeks so that I have a chance to finish reformatting our home (including the office that I will be moving into), to get my wife back in the house, and to get settled to some degree before returning to work. It will be a precarious balancing act both logistically and financially, but it is the best shot that we have at both of us keeping our jobs. Thank you so much for everything, Ally! I think that you have been doing a great job and that you are easy to talk to. You come across as very caring and empathetic in a way that only somebody who feels at great depth would. Thank you for being you.”
